Marasmus is mainly caused by protein, calorie and other nutrient deficiency.Protein - energy malnutrition is a serious health and nutritional problem.This is a vicious circle of malnutrition and infection which is characterized by Marasmus and Kwashiorkor.This is also expressed as protein calorie malnutrition (PCM). This mainly affects children.Marasmus is characterized by irritability,diarrhea, vomiting, negligible fat on skin,extreme loss of body weight, muscular weakness, wrinkled skin etc. Appetite is generally unaffected and edema is absent.
