Standard precautions are mandatory in situations where the health care personal has the chance to come in contact with blood, body fluid, secretions, excretions, mucous membranes, nonintact skin, when handling or cleaning contaminated items.

Non-sterile equipments like gloves and mask must be used while handling procedures that involves blood or body fluid. These is because sterile precautions are mostly taken for surgical procedures or situations where strictest minimized risk of infection is required.
