Social Determinants of Health (SDH). The social determinants of health are the circumstances in which people are born, grow up, live, work and age, and the systems put in place to deal with illness. These circumstances are shaped by a wider set of forces: economics, social policies, and politics – at both local and international levels.
Question:
Select one of the three socio-environmental determinants (discrimination, place of residence, or gender). Describe how this determinant can lead to inequities in health and opportunities in a particular population. Explain how this inequity may be framed as a human rights issue.
2. Consider a disease, other than HIV/AIDS, such as malaria. How might public health efforts with respect to this disease raise human rights concerns?
Malaria is a disease caused by the bites of female anopheles mosquitoes. Though this is not a communicable disease .The stigma in caring and treating this patient are still prevalent in healthcare sector depending upon the socioeconomic determinants. Here the place of residence is highly considered to get this illness because mosquitoes grow in poor sanitation environment .This may make the healthcare professionals or the organization to segregate the care based on location determining the social factors like their economic condition education ,etc. ,For instance if the patient is from a slum area the care is determined by this factors .The public health efforts with respect to the disease condition can raise Human Rights concern for treating all patients in equity and not discriminating on the basis of the location from where the patient came from .Providing them respect and rights to get standardized and equal care like all.
