Is it possible for a doctor to end the use of measures taken to prolong a patient’s life without intending that patient’s death? Explain.
It is one among the many ethical issues related to medical practice. Termination of treatment or withdrawal of treatment may be done at the client's request or family's request (do not resuscitate)only with clear documentation. This may also be done if the health care team determines that brain death has occurred. Euthanasia or mercy killing is another aspect.Earlier this term was used to mean deliberate taking of a person's life to put the individual out of misery. This definition has now been amended to include the withdrawal of treatment also. Laws surrounding this ethical issue differ among states. However withdrawal of life saving measures may be done in the above mentioned circumstances, ie, when the client or family asks for withdrawal of treatment and in cases of brain death.
