dwight is a 4 year who lives with his parents and 18 month old sister. Dwight parents decided to send him to preschool when he turned 3 years old to provide him with contact and interactions with other preschoolers. Dwight lives episodes of otitis media (OM) secondary to respiratory infections. Following his last episode of OM his pediatrician suggested to his parents that Dwight should have tubes put in his ears.
Otitis media is nothing but a form of infection which occurs in the middle ear by bacteria. Almost 75% of children before the age five gets this infection in their life. Usually it is treatable with the basic antibiotics but if there is recurrent and severe infection it needs a small procedure to correct it. A small tube is placed in the middle of the ear to ensure passage of air, relieve pressure by draining fluid. This is termed to be tympanostomy tube. The recovering of hearing and prevention of infection rate is very high .The child will recover in about two to three months after the procedure .Hence this tube is recommended to this patient by the pediatrician.
