Question
The
nurse is caring for a client with diabetes and heart failure who is
28wk pregnant....
The
nurse is caring for a client with diabetes and heart failure who is
28wk pregnant. The client reported to the hospital for the CST that
was ordered by the doctor. What is the primary nursing intervention
immediatly after the CST?
A contraction stress test (CST) is never
performed at 28wks of gestation, it is performed near the end of
pregnancy (34 weeks' gestation) to determine how well the fetus
will cope with the contractions of childbirth. The aim is to induce
contractions and monitor the fetus to check for heart rate
abnormalities using a cardiotocograph. A CST is one type of
antenatal fetal surveillance technique.
At 28wks of gestation, Non Stress Test (NST) is performed as a
nonstress test is recommended when it's believed that the baby is
at an increased risk of death. A nonstress test may be done after
26 to 28 weeks of pregnancy. Certain nonstress test results might
indicate that mother and baby need further monitoring, testing or
special care.
In complications such as diabetes and heart failure, NST is
recommended.
