Homework Answers

Answer #1

1. Desired dose of Biaxin : 300mg , Orally, 4th hourly

Dose of Biaxin send from Pharmacy: 500mg/ml.

A. Is the prescribed dose safe:

Safe dose range of Biaxin for children: is 7 to 12mg/kg/dose.

Weight of the child : 20kg.

So the maximum dose that could be administered is 12mg/kg/dose

For a 20Kg child maximum dose = 12 x 20 = 240mg/dose.

So the dose of 500mg Biaxin per dose is not safe.

B. How many mls would the nurse administer?

1ml of biaxin = 500mg

-----ml of biaxin = 300mg

Amount to be adminstered = 300/500 = 0.6 ml

So the nurse should take 0.6 ml of syrup to adminster a dose of 300mg Biaxin.

2. 1 Liter D5 ½ NS over 24 hours.

What would the rate (ml) be using the Joey Kangaroo Pump?

1 liter = 1000ml

  1000 ml over 24 hrs , that is 1000 / 24 = 41.6ml/hr

As in Joey Kangaroo pump, values with decimal points cannot be entered.

So set the pump at 42ml/hr in continuous mode.

3. Dose of Vancomycin ordered : 700mg IV over 2 hours daily.

Dose available: 700mg / 250ml.

Rate at which infusion pump to be set :

250ml (containing a dose of 700mg vancomycin) / 2 hrs

= 125ml/hr.

Set the infusion pump at 125ml/hr.

Start time is 9:00 AM.What time will the IV infuse Military and  Traditional

250ml of containing vancomycin @ 125ml/hr

250 ml / 125 ml/hr = 2 hrs

60min x 2hrs = 120 minutes.

End time is 11:00am (traditional) 1100hours(military)

4.Order: Phenobarbital 250mg orally 8th hourly

Dose in hand: Phenobarbital 500mg / 5ml.

As 5 ml = 500mg, desired dose of 250 mg is available in 2.5ml [ (250 x5) / 500]

1 teaspoon = 5ml

So to take 2.5ml, nurse should ask the mother to take half a teaspoon of medicine.

5. Order: Lanoxin 36 mcg.

Dose in hand : 0.05mg/ml.

Calculate the mls to be given. Round to nearest hundredth.

1 mg = 1000 mcg (microgram)

0.5mg = 500 mcg

So 1 ml of syrup Lanoxin contains 500mcg

----ml = 36 mcg

= 36 / 500 = 0.072ml

Inorder to round off  0.07 ml of syrup is to be administered.
