Understanding of nursing leadership:

THE NURSING LEADERSHIP can be defined as the power to influence others to create a best possible environment to provide the highest quality care. The nurse leader must keep her team motivated to provide best possible paitient care and integrate the medical care and the nursing care in all clinical scenarios. The nurse leader must be able to effect changes as and when the situation demands.and act in the patients interest. There must be strong analytical and problem solving skills and timely decision making with good communication skills.

The objective is to lead and influence high quality patient care.

Application of the novice to expert model to the nursing leadership:

A formal degree and education of the registered nurses is required for them to be the nurse leader;however it is with experience in clinical situations working with teams and multidisciplinary integration exposure over a period of time that they can master the skills of a proficient leader and hence it is imperative that they evolve through a series of changes before they become expert leaders.
