Sentinel events are unexpected events that may cause death or serious physical or psychological injury to the patient. Examples of some of the common sentinel events include falls, unintended retention of a foreign object and performing procedures on the wrong patient. Few incidences like suicide of a patient receiving care, discharging an infant to a wrong family, unexpecteed death of a full term baby are also considered as sentinal events. Poor quality of care may cause long term illness and impose financial burden on the individual and family due to expenditure on frequent treatment needs. Poor health care services increases the mortality and morbidity rates in the community as well as reduces the count of eligible workforce in different sectors.This will affect the economy of the country.
