ANSWER : Nasal congestion, often referred to as a “stuffy nose,” is a typical symptom of the common cold, occurring when nasal and adjacent tissues and blood vessels become swollen with excess fluid. When health care providers treat ailments in these individuals, caution should be exercised, as several medications are contraindicated. For example, because decongestants, which are frequently used to manage nasal congestion, can increase blood pressure (BP), their use is a concern in patients with hypertension.

The counseling that can provide triage nurse to client is :

  • There is no need to worry about nasal congestion, it can be managed at home.
  • It can be a side effect of anti hypertensive drugs.
  • Individuals with nasal congestion are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids to thin mucus and promote nasal drainage.
  • Getting plenty of rest and limiting activities are also warranted for affected patients
  • A cool-mist humidifier at the bedside can combat congestion worsened by dry, winter air.
  • Use saline nasal spray to help relieve symptoms. Limit use of decongestant nasal sprays to no longer than a few days, as instructed on package labels. But always check BP after using the nasal spray as decongestant can increase the BP.
  • At home, Over-the-counter saline, or saltwater, drops can be gently squirted into the nostrils to loosen the mucus in the nose. The liquid and mucus can then be suctioned out of the nose with a rubber syringe, or bulb.
  • If still it will be present for longer time then again contact to Dr. Landon's office.

Also nurse will tell the preventive ways of nasal congestion to the client:

  • Wash hands often.
  • Throw away used tissues after blowing or wiping the nose.
  • Keep away from those who have colds or infections.
  • Eat healthy and exercise regularly to help boost the immune system.
  • Cough and sneeze into the inside of the elbow, not into the hand.
  • Clean and disinfect common surfaces, such as tables and countertops, toys, door handles, and bathroom fixtures.
