A patient experiences thoracic trauma, what laboratory analysis is anticipated and why?
What is thoracic trauma
Thoracic trauma encompasses the sequalae secondary to trauma to all of the thoracic organs: heart, great vessels, lungs, airways, esophagus, diaphragm, and chest wall.
Laboratory analysis
A complete blood count (CBC) is often prescribed to rule out blood loss. For acute blood loss CBC test is not suggested. Platelet and white blood cell count also analysed.
Why is cardiac monitoring and /or a 12-lead ECG prescribed?
It is highly recommended since it helps to find out the chest contusion in the first place and it is vital.
Cardiac monitoring including heart rate, pulse and blood pressure also monitored.
