Medical assistants are professionals in any healthcare setting who perform administrative duties such as greeting patients, attending telephones, filing and updating medical records, scheduling appointments and admission, insurance form filling, handling correspondence, billing, etc. Though they are unlicensed and can perform only administrative duties, the physicians can decide about the appropriate use of these professionals in healthcare delivery. Thus a medical assistant with the required minimum training can administer subcutaneous, intradermal, or intramuscular injections and supportive services with the authorization and under the supervision of a licensed physician, surgeon, or nurse practitioner. Therefore, medical assistants should have sufficient experience and knowledge about medications to avoid any medication errors and resultant fatalities.
