What are your responsibilities as an RN related to medication administration and how will you carry it out?

An RN must demonstrate her knowledge and skills while administrating medication. Medication administration is one for the most common and important procedure undertaken by the nurse. She must-

- educate the client about medications

- prepare and administer medication using the rights of the medication administration

-review the clients data such as lab results, allergies etc prior to medication administration

- evaluate the appropriateness and accuracy of medication order for the client.

a nurse must evaluate all the 10 rights while administering medications to a client.

Various ethical and legal aspects of medication administration are also to be kept in mind.

* Nurses are expected to know the minimum as well as maximum dosage of the medication to be administered.

* The laws regarding the use of narcotics should be taken care of.narcotics should be kept under nurses custody and an account of their use should be maintained.

* Medications should not be left unattended at the patient's bedside.

* Every institution has some accepted rules and regulations about practices. A nurse should be well versed with the acceptable norms of the institution.

* Charting or proper documentation of the procedure is a must.
