INCREASED RISK OF FALLS AMONG OLDER ADULTS

The number of persons above the age of 60 years is fast growing ,the major area of concern is the health of the elderly with multiple medical and psycological problems .Falls are the one of the major problems in the elderly and are considered one of the GERIATRIC GIANTS .

. Risk factors for falls included muscle weakness ,a history of falls ,use of four or more prescription medications ,use of an assistive devices ,arthritis ,depression ,age older than 80 years ,and impairments in gait ,balance ,cognition vision ,and activities of daily living .

. Falls and fractures are more common in males than females due to the intrinsic causes .

. Drug induced falls were commonly associated with sedatives and hypnotics usage .

. Falls is an event caused by age associated diseases like parkinsons disease ,musckuloskeletal problems in association with physiological changes like impairment of sensory system ,impairment of rightinig reflex, and decrease in learn body mass.

BEST PRACTICE OF FALLS PREVENTION IN OLDER ADULTS

Multifaceted programs including exercise,vision correction ,medication review and adjustment ,and envirnment modification ,appear to be effective in randomized control trials .Individually prescribed programs of muscle stregthening and balance retraining .And also may be effective as sole intervention preventing falls device such as hip protecters ,etc.

COCLUSION

Falls are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in the elderly .Most offen the cause of falls is multifactorial .Falls and their sequalae are potentially preventable and hence it is of important to know the risk factors for falls in the elderly .
