Answer: The pathophysiology of emphysema can be explained as a condition where there enlargement of the airspaces occurs in the terminal bronchioles. This causes reduction in the alveolar surface area which causes hurdle in gas exchange process.
The emphysema destroys the tissues of the lungs as well as alveoli. This progressive damage increases problems in the bronchial tubes. Hence slowly the tubes gets collapsed. The air due to poor exchange, get in trapped causes inflammed lungs.
