the following lab values will have changed from normal if the peritoneal dialysis is Miss for three consecutive days potassium sodium magnesium calcium and phosphorus indicate if they will be lower or higher than normal for the lab values explain why each of these is lower or higher than normal
It is usually very unwise to miss any schedule of dialysis as it may cause the electrolytes to reach a point where it could be fatal for the patient.
However the effects of missed peritoneal dialysis on the named electrolytes will be as follows:
sodium is usually retained but the lab values may appear normal or hyponatremic due to dilution from fluid retention.
Calcium levels tends to fall bcz higher dialysate calcium leads to calcium influx into extracellular fluid, lower dialysate calcium results in calcium efflux from extracellular fluid.
Potassium tends to increase bcz of decreased renal ion excretion.
Magnesium levels will increase. since creatinine clearance falls below 30 ml/min, the excretion of magnesium becomes impaired
Phosphorus levels tends to increase due to positive phosphorus balance and kideney's inability to filter phosphorus.
