Hyperactivity of the thyroid gland (increase in the production and release of thyroid hormones)

Occurs in women more than in men

Common form is graves disease orhers are multi nodular goitre, autoimmune thyroiditis, thyrotoxicosis

Causes-autoimmunity in graves disease, triggering factora are low iodine levels, infection, stressful life events. Here the patient will have antinodies against TSH receptors.

Clinical features

Excess thyroid hormones causes hyper metabolism and increases sensitivity to sympathetic system.

Enlarged gland . Auscultation reveals bruits due to increase in nlood supply

Exopthalmos.

CVS- hypertension, rapid pulse, increased carfoac output, palpitation

Gastro- increased apetite, wt loss, increased peristalsis, hepato splenomegaly

Skin- warm skin, thin brittle nails Silky hair,

Management

Drugs- antithyroid drugs, iodine, beta blockers

Radioactive iodine

Surgery
