Euthanasia is an act carried out by a doctor that ends a patient’s life, in which the patient is suffering from extreme pain or when life unstainable. Euthanasia is different from physician-assisted suicide because the doctor carries out the final act that causes death. Physician-assisted suicide when the patient receives assistance from a doctor to end his or her own life. The important differentiating factor is that physician-assisted suicide is that act of leads to death carried out by the patient, not the doctor. Usually, the doctor prescribes a lethal dose of medication in which the patient takes to end his/her life. As a nursing student, I have learned about the word autonomy, in simple terms, it means that the patient should and will always have a say in their medical treatment. Since the patients have the right to autonomy, they should also have the right to say how, when, and where they die. However, this decision should be only made after the patient has been counseled by a licensed therapist and doctor to prevent the patient from deciding on a whim. There should be a proper medical context for physician-assisted suicide, like life-ending disease, or when a condition can no longer be treated. The patient should not be able to walk into a doctor’s office and ask for a lethal dose prescription because life is not going in the direction they want.
