Case study continued (questions 5–8) When Imogen meets with her supervisor, Grace, to seek support with her schedule, Grace is initially concerned that Imogen can’t manage the workload. Grace suggests she prepare a list so she can see what she is spending her time on. Imogen writes the following for a typical day: • Care for Jack, John, Bernard, Mario and Rudy – see to medication, meals, morning and afternoon tea, personal care and appointment scheduling and planning • Clean the day room • Update case notes for evening-shift staff • Check stock levels and update documents for the shift manager • Help other new staff with their clients • Answer buzzers • Complete other tasks indicated by the last shift in staff handover notes Imogen shows her list to Grace who immediately identifies several tasks that are not Imogen’s responsibility as they are outside her work role. They work together to clarify Imogen’s tasks and discussed her job description. Imogen then develops a new list and on the advice of Grace, schedules additional time with the people whose behaviour deems they require more support. Imogen prioritises client care and time spent with each person as this is the most important aspect of her job role and the part of the job she had always enjoyed the most. She also schedules contingency time into her daily tasks. With her new strategy in place, Imogen finds she is better able to cope with the stress of work and is nearly always able to leave work on time and make it to her yoga class. In fact, Imogen is so pleased with the changes to her working life she feels she has more time and energy to go out after work to catch up with family and friends and do an exercise class.
