Ans) Medication: paclitaxel

Category Class: Antimitotics

Expected pharmacological action:

- Paclitaxel-treated cells have defects in mitotic spindle assembly, chromosome segregation, and cell division.

- It stabilizes the microtubule polymer and protects it from disassembly.

Therapeutic use:

- Useful in treatment of breast, ovarian, lung, bladder, prostate, melanoma, esophageal, as well as other types of solid tumor cancers, Kaposi's sarcoma.

Complications:

- Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, mouth sores, muscle/joint pain, numbness/tingling/burning of the hands/feet, flushing, dizziness, or drowsiness, temporary hair loss.

Containdication & precautions:

- Hypersensitivity

Interactions:

- adenovirus types 4 and 7 live, oral. eluxadoline.

Medication administration:

- Paclitaxel is administered Intravenously but prolonged may cause extravasation as the drug is an irritant.

- Avoid IM & subcutaneous routes.

Nursing interventions:

- Assessment of the general condition of the patient.

- Intravenous site to be observed closely.

- Follow the ten rights of medication administration: Right- patient, drug, dose, route, time, documentation, assessment, education, evaluation, right to refuse.

- Inform patient to report any signs & Symptoms of complications.

Patient education:

- There are chances of bleeding so- advice to use soft tooth brush.

- Don't skip medication & if skipped avoid double dose.

- Take medication as prescribed by the doctor.

- Report any signs and symptoms of complications.

Evaluation of medication effectiveness:

- Landing to normal ranges in blood reports.

- Improving patient's condition.

- Increasing overall disease free survival rates.
