The social determinant of health refers to the environment, or the condition in which people are born, live and work which includes education, economic stability, availability of resources (water, food, housing), job opportunity, social support, etc.

One of the most common social determinants of health is socioeconomic status. The socioeconomic status refers to a class of individuals or families according to their income and occupation.

The socioeconomic status has a great impact on physical health. Those include -

  • Socioeconomic status is responsible for health inequality, which means people of the higher socioeconomic class have more access to quality health care but people with lower socioeconomic class does not able to afford the quality health care that affect the quality of life they live.
  • People of the lower socioeconomic class are more prone to get infectious and nutritional deficiency disorders because of poor sanitization and lack of food availability.
  • People of higher socioeconomic class are more prone to get noncommunicable and chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and cancer due to their sedentary and stressful lifestyle.
