Maslow's hierarchy of basic human needs:

Abraham Maslow was an American Psychologist who created Maslow's hierarchy of human needs, based on human motivation. According to Maslow, physiological needs; air, hunger, thirst etc, then safety needs , has to fulfill first , then safety needs, love and belonging, self esteem and self actualization needs.

Nursing interventions based on Maslow's hierarchy of human needs:

Physiological:

* Monitor oxygenation status and administer oxygen as per physician's order.

*Check for any dehydration / edema or fluid retention and

- provide plenty of fluids, if the condition permits

- administer I.V fluids as per physician's order

- administer medication to reduce fluid retention

* Assess the nutritional status of the patient and any problems associated with feeding like difficulty in swallowing , nausea, vomiting etc.

* Assist in oral feeding or nasogastric feeding .

* Assist in urinary or bowel elimination

Safety Needs:

* Provide a calm and safe environment

* Report any suspected abuse , child abuse / elderly abuse

Self esteem needs:

* Provide psychological support to the patient

*Encourage the patient to ventilate his feelings

*Build up a positive self esteem in the patient

Self actualization :

* Participate patient in setting the goal or planning the interventions to facilitate autonomy in patient

* Assist the spiritual Needs of the patient by providing a conducive environment for personal prayer.
