A Diaphragmatic hernia is defined as a communication between the abdominal and thoracic cavities with or with out abdominal contents in thorax.

The obvious/cardinal sign that suggests that the infant had an undiagnosed congenital diaphragmatic hernia is Respiratory distress (tachypnea, grunting,cyanosis,use of accessory muscles)

The other signs include:

Scaphoid abdomen.

Increased chest wall diameter.

Bowel sound in chest.

Decreased or absence of breathe sounds on the side of hernia.

Shifting of apex beat to contralateral side of hernia.
