1) Late adulthood (old age) is generally considered to begin at about age 65.Erik Erikson suggests that at this time it is important to find meaning and satisfaction in life rather than to become bitter and disillusioned, that is,to resolve the conflict of integrity vs. despair .Despite the problem associated with longevity, studies of people in their 70s have shown that growing old is not necessarily synonymous with substantial mental or physical deterioration.During late adulthood the skin continues to lose elasticity, reaction time slows further, muscle strength and mobility diminishes, hearing and vision decline, and the immune system weakens.Memory degenerates in old age,so older adults have a harder time remembering and attending to information. Many older people are happy and engaged in a variety of activities.Gerontology,an interdisciplinary field that studies the process of aging and the aging population, involves psychology, biology, sociology, and other fields.
a)The classifications of age group of the elderly are elderly adults between the ages of 65 and 74 years as youngest-old,those between ages75 and 84 years as middle-old,and those aged over 85 years as oldest-old. The old old 75 to 84 age group is more likely to experience limitations on physical activity due to chronic disease such as arthritis, heart conditions, hypertension (especially for women),and hearing or visual impairment.RateRates of death due to heart disease, cancer, and cerebral vascular disease are double that experienced by people 65-74.
b) The End of life care nurses solely on end of life care, providing hands on nursing care around the clock-either in a facility or in the patients home. Not only do they manage pain and other symptoms, they assist in the process of death with dignity. Nurses enact the support role in EOL care by building trusting relationship with family members as they navigate the EOL decision making process and by demonstrating empathy for patients, family members, and physicians. Good communication of a dying persons prognosis improves their end of life care and the bereavement experience of those important to them.It can help to ensure that the dying persons expressed wishes are considered and to avoid misunderstandings and unnecessary distress.
