You are new to the position of Vice President of HIM for a large chain of health care facilities. As you have assessed the current situation in the HIM departments at each facility, you have met with the HIM Directors, all of whom do not believe that AHIMA Vision 2016 presents realistic goals for any of their employees because they feel their employees have reached their greatest potential and believe that they will not be successful if they try to pursue any kind of additional training or promotion.
Indicate if you agree or disagree with the HIM Directors. Why or why not?
Do you feel this is an example of the Peter Principle? Why or why not?
Explain how empowerment might be used to encourage the HIM
Directors to educate staff on how to achieve competence to pursue
higher level positions within the organization and/or pursue
opportunities for themselves.
The HIM Directors view cannot be agreed because AHIMA helps a healthcare organization to improve in all aspects from clinical practice to research work. Hence in order to provide a quality, advanced ,skillful care this will be useful. The staffs gains advance knowledge by recent updates and sets a standard .
This is similar to Peter principle as the HIM Directors had considered that their employees has reached their greatest potential (Peter plateau) and needs no further training to improve themselves for any reason. This indirectly signifies that their employees are incompetent after that level .
The empowerment can be used by ordering the HIM Directors to train the staff based on the AHIMA vision to gain recent updates and improve their knowledge and skills .This can help them to get promotion based on the competencies gained.
