Case Study;
Mary Williams, a 67, made an appointment to see Dr. Jackson, an orthopedic surgeon, regarding arthritis in her left knee. It seems that the pain is increasing, and she is not ready to face a knee replacement at this time because she continues to work full-time as a high school art teacher. After making the appointment, the office receptionist instructed Ms. Williams to go to the official website to complete the patient history form prior to coming to the scheduled appointment. Mrs. Williams completed the form as instructed. On the day of the appointment, Mrs. Williams arrived about 20 minutes early to sign in, pay her copayment, and provide any other additional information. The medical assistant accomplished Mrs. Williams to the back office to obtain her weight, blood pressure, and temperature; she also asked her about her current medications and the reason for her visit. Upon completion, Mrs. William was directed to an examination room. After Dr. Jackson went over her medical history, recent radiology reports, and examined her knees, she determined that Mrs. Williams would be eligible for the replacement. Because Mrs. Williams stated that she was not interested in a knee replacement, Dr. Jackson suggested that she could receive an experimental gel injection into her knee to cushion her joints and give her about 12 months of pain relief. Dr. Jackson gave Mrs. Williams some pharmaceutical literature about the experimental gel injection. She also gave Mrs. Williams the informed consent document to read and sign if she was interested in trying the experimental gel injection. Dr. Jackson said that Mrs. Williams should read the information and schedule another appointment with the office nurse to discuss any concerns that she might have regarding the experimental gel injection prior to making the decision.
