DALYs = Disability Adjusted Life Years
The DALY is increasingly common in the area of public health and health impact assessment (HIA). It includes the potential years in life lost due to the effects of premature death, it also consider equal years of 'healthy' life lost by being in states of poor health or disability. However,mortality and morbidity are combined into one , common metrics.
It identifies how much healthy life is lost . same conditions make different contributions to it is because examples like cardiovascular disorders, cerebral vascular diseases, depression , osteoarthritis and COPD can contribute similar impacts to this condition.
DALY is calculated by
DALY = YLD (years lived with disability) + YLL years of life lost .
