Case Presentation
John Roberts is a prelicensure nursing student who has been asked to be part of an interprofessional education activity at his school. His school has students doing clinical at many hospitals in the area, and he also works in a local hospital as a nurse tech. He loves the clinical environment and is quite competent in his nurse tech role.
This interprofessional education activity includes students in occupational therapy, physical therapy, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, and nursing. In his work experience, John has worked (although minimally) with people who are in each of these fields, but he’s sure that they don’t have the “real picture” of what patients experience, particularly because he has often floated the hospital as he has worked his shift as a tech.
The small group portion of this interprofessional educational activity includes John, two occupational therapy students, and one physical therapy student. Going into the exercise, John is sure that he is the one who will have more knowledge and understanding than any of the other students.
Case Analysis
Findings indicate that novice learners often marginalize other novice learner abilities. In fact, minimizing others’ knowledge is actually a rhetorical strategy. Although it is unlikely that a novice student would intentionally diminish a student from another profession, such initial thinking is not unusual, especially when one is inexperienced. Interprofessional education learning opportunities are excellent opportunities to change behaviors and promote colleagueship among various professional groups. John needs to be aware of this documented tendency among novice professionals and do what he can to foster an environment of teamwork and collaboration with fellow students. Such actions will encourage reflection for John and provide feedback for other members of the interprofessional team.
