Mark is a 35-year-old male who had a cold virus for 14 days. He reported having cough, sore throat, and fatigue. He also  presented that cold and  fatigued persistent for the past 3 weeks. Mark stated that he has been bruising easily lately.  He also stated that he noted little purple spots all over his arms and chest. During assessment nurse noted a large bruise on his right arm, petechiae and purpura over his  chest and arms.  Lab result shows platelet count of 40,000mm3.

The signs and symptoms of ITP are,

  • Purpura- the purple color skin after blood has leaked under it
  • Petechia- Tiny red dots under the skin
  • Nose bleeds
  • Bleeding in the mouth
  • Blood in the vomits,urine and stool
  • Bleeding in the head- This is the most dangerous symptom of ITP

The diagnostic measures are,

  • Complete blood count
  • Additional blood and urine test
  • Careful review of medications
  • Bone marrow aspiration- this will examine the platlet production.
