Which of the following anti-inflammatories—prednisone, acetylsalicylic acid, or rofecoxib—would be the preferred drug for an individual with gastric ulcers and Why?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Answer) Prednisolone will be used.

explaination -

both acetylsalicylic acid and rofecoxib are NSAIDs and are COX inhibitors. COX is required for synthesis of prostaglandin. Prostaglandin in gastric mucosa inhibit acid secretion and promote mucus and bicarbonate secretion and act as protective for gastric mucosa. So both these drug act as topical irritant on gastric mucosa and by decreasing prostaglandin in gastric mucosa precipitate gastric ulcer.

In other hand prednisolone is a steroid and anti-inflammatory action is by inhibiting immune system or like corticosteroid hormone. And is not related to disrupting protection of gastric mucosa.
