Serotonin is a compound present in brain which helps in development and regulation of mood in a person. Absence of this serotonin might cause depression. And, over production of the same chemical can lead to serotonin syndrome. This syndrome can lead to increase in muscular activity, restlessness, diarrhea, hypertension, and increase in body temperature.

If left unnoticed, it may even lead to death of a patient. So, drugs like serotonergic depressants like cyproheptadine, which acts on bringing down the serotonin levels in brain can be given to a patient. And, other treatments like withdrawal of drugs that actually caused increase in serotonin can be given. To avoid seizure and further muscle activity, drugs like benzodiazepine can be given to a patient to make the person stable. All these procedures can take atleast 24 hours to bring down the serotonin level in one's brain.
