Complications of Wound Healing
Choose 2 complications of wound healing that have been described in your textbook. Describe each complication and the pathophysiology behind why the complication occurred. What would be the clinical manifestations (signs & symptoms) of the complication? What would be treatment options to correct the complication? Explain your thoughts and ideas fully.
1.) Hypertrophic scars
It occurs when the remodelling stage goes for a long time and they are more cellular and vascular than the mature ones.
Signs and symptoms: They are red in color, raised in texture, itchy. They will eventually mature and become pale and flat. Delayed wound healing results in such scars.
Example: If infection occurs at a place where
skin tension is high such as at the tip of the shoulder, they
remain within the confines of the wound area itself.
Treatment: Surgical excision, Combined cryotherapy
and intralesional corticosteroid injection
2.) Keloid scars:
They are more frequently associated with such as Afro-Carribeans. They mostly occur in the chest region, back shoulders.
Sign and symptoms: These are regions of extreme overgrowth beyond the confines of the original wound area.
Treatment: riple keloid therapy, pulsed dye laser
