ASSERTIVE COMMUNICATION

Assertive communication is the ability to express one's own ideas, feelings and emotions in an open, honest way, while keeping respect to other's feelings. This way of communication offers a better, relation with teammates.

Assertive communication offers clear, confident and controlled way of dealing with others. An assertive communication can be considered as an expression of self without hurting others rights.

Whereas, Aggressive and submissive/passive communication and behaviors increases stress and worsens the relationship among the colleagues.

2. WHY SHOULD THE NURSES USE THIS FORM OF COMMUNICATION, WHEN PRESENTING INFORMATION TO THE COLLABORATIVE TEAM

Assertive communication helps to keep confidence and reduces stress among the communicators.

While presenting information, a nurse may use assertive communication, as this will

  • Build confidence among the nurse, since nurse express her honest views
  • Helps to make positive decision( as, in this mode of communication, the presenter respects others rights and feelings)
  • Provide honest and open way of communication
  • The collaborative team listens actively, since their ideas are also considered as important, though disagreements are conveyed in a positive manner
  • Promotes team spirit, as everyone gets chance to express their agreements or disagreements
  • Create a calm and stressfree environment while presenting the information
  • Focus on problem solving approach towards conflicts
  • Keeps the nurse in control over their own behavior

Nurses are facing diverse life situations in their professional life and they have to communicate effectively with the health team members inorder to provide efficient and effective care to the client. To maintain a healthy relation with others, while reducing negotiations the nurse need to follow assertive communication skills. This will help to get a stress free prifessional life and helps to earn respect from others
