The Mugger Crocodile (Crocodylus palustris) listed as inclined on the IUCN Red list is one of the two species of Crocodiles determined in Sri Lanka, the different being the Saltwater Crocodile. The grownup Mugger Crocodile is blackish gray in color with a wide elongated snout, the male growing to about 10 toes and weighing over 1000 pounds. It inhabits clean water habitats such as lakes, ponds, tanks, rivers, swamps and marshes. Being a knowledgeable predator, it waits in ambush for its kill which is ordinarily fish, reptiles, birds and mammals and in some instances human beings too. A latest survey suggests that the largest populace of Mugger Crocodile in the world, amounting to over five hundred is located in the Yala National Park in Sri Lanka.
