Discuss the clinical significance of the fact that the posterior chest consists of almost all lower lobe.
Posteriorly, the apex of the lungs located at 7th cervical vertebrae, and base of the lung corresponds to T12. Almost all lower lobes pointed on the posterior chest. Right middle lobe does not project in the posterior chest. This clinical significance helps to examine the chest posteriorly through inspection, palpitation, percussion, and auscultation.
Inspection: Check for Skin color and condition.
Palpitation: Check for symmetry by placing the thumb at the level of T9 or T10. Palpitate the chest for vibration (tactile fremitus).
Percussion: Percuss in the interspace for the predominates of resonance in the healthy adults.
Auscultate: Auscultate for breath sounds from apices C7 to the bases T10 for bronchial, bronchovesicular, and vesicular sounds.
