If a nurse listens pleural friction rub on auscultation, it is suggestive of that patient is suffering from either pneumonia, pulmonary embolism, malignant pleural disease or pleurisy secondary to viral infection.

What is Pleural function rub - usually pleura has oleural fluid between it's two layers which keeps it lubricated , but in this above disease conditions this gets disrubyed so on breathing movement we here a friction sign called as pleural function rub.

So to summarise The pleural rub sound results from the movement of inflamed and roughened pleural surfaces against one another during movement of the chest wall.
