Before reviewing the information on impaired nurses, I knew that being intoxicated was someone taking drugs or alcohol before or during work. I know nurses have easier access to medications then other people and puts them at a higher risk for using while working. In doing so, this puts everyone at risk. Not only their patients, but also other employers around them. I think about a nurse asking another nurse to verify their waste of a drug. That nurse puts their credentials in saying the nurse wasted the drug. However, that nurse never verified that the nurse disposed of that medication. Both nurses can get in trouble. After looking through the material, my opinion did not change, however, I learned more regarding the subject. I learned 1 in 10 nurses suffer from substance abuse and nurses who work in the emergency department are at greater risk.
