Beta - lactam antibiotics ----

— These antibiotics are bactericidal in nature, consist of beta lactam ring in chemical structure.

— They are used for antimicrobial activities , to inhibit the growth of microorganisms.

— Their are four classes of beta lactam antibiotic , penicillin, carbapenems, cephalosporin, monobactams.

— Absorption of beta lactam antibiotic is determined by binding of protein product, they get eliminate from body by kidney.

Mechanism of action — They attach to penicillin binding protein ,thus inhibit the activity of transpeptidase which causes destruction of cell wall of bacteria and causes cell wall lysis.

— They shows poor stability towards acid and has small half life.

— Allergy to beta lactam antibiotic cause rashes, nephritis, fever, vomiting, dizziness, etc.
