Diagnostic tests related to pregnancy and child birth are done either using maternal flood or fetal blood or aminiotic fluid. They are usually done to detect any chromosomal or genetic abnormality

There are various teat done in 1st, 2nd and thrid trimister like USG, chorionic villi sampling, amniocentesis, maternal blood test for pregnancy associated plasma protein screening, HCG (Human chronic gonadotropin hormone)

AMNIOCENTESIS

Amniocentesis is a diagnostic procedure done by withdrawing a small amount of amiotic fluid by puncturing the abdominal by a thin hollow needle under local anesthesia.

It is done to detect any chromosomal abnormality, cleft lip cleft pallet, any heart defects, amniotic infection etc

There are 1 percent risk of damage to fetus or mother, premature labour, miscarriage and infection.

Amniocentesis can be as ultrasound guided procedure to prevent and minimize the chances of injury to mother or fetus
