Answer #1

Answer to question number 1:

Age of the child is 9yrs.

Weight of the child is 88lbs. Converting to kgs, we get 88lbs =39.9kgs

Prescribed dose of Amoxicillin is 90mg/kg/day in 3 doses for 10days

Therefore, we need 90mg x 39.9kg = 3591 mg/day

Available dose in the pharmacy is 400mg/5ml

Therefore 3591mg x 5ml ÷ 400mg = 44.88 ml/ day

Since it has to be given in three doses, the total dose divide by 3 hence 44.88ml /3 = 14.96ml rounded to 15ml/ dose.

Since we require 45ml/day, the total dose for 10 days will be 45ml x 10 days = 450ml.

Instruction on the label:

  • Take 15ml of the Amoxicillin suspension three times a day for 10days.
  • The dry powder should be reconstituted as per the instructions to form an oral suspension.
  • Wait for 5 minutes to ensure complete dispersion.
  • Store below 25° C.
  • Shake well before use.

Answer to question number 2:

Age of the patient is 10yrs.

Weight of the child is 88lbs. Converting to kgs, we get 39.9kg.

Prescribed dose of Lamotrigine is 5mg/kg/day in 2 doses for 30days

Therefore we will need 5mg x 39.9kg = 199.5 mg/day. Rounding off to 200mg/day.

Available dose in the pharmacy is 25mg tablet. Hence the patient requires 200mg/25mg = 8 tablets /day.

Therefore for a month of 30 days, a total of 8 x 30 = 240 tablets are required.

Instruction on the label:

  • Take 4 tablets of Lamotrigine 25mg each at time.
  • Chew or swallow the tablet as a whole. Do not crush or break the tablet.

Answer to question number 3:

Age of the patient is 3years.

Weight of the patient is 44lbs. Converting to kgs, we get 44lbs =19.95kgs

Prescribed dose of Sulfamethaxozole/TMP is 40mg/kg/day in 2 doses for 10 days

Therefore, we need 40mg x 19.95kg = 798 mg/day. Rounded to 800mg.

Available dose in the pharmacy is 200mg/5ml

Therefore 800mg x 5ml ÷ 200mg = 20 ml/ day

Since we require 20ml/day, the total dose for 10 days will be 10days x20 ml = 200ml.

Instruction on the label:

  • Take 10ml of the Sulfamethaxozole/TMP suspension two times a day for 10 days
  • To be taken orally with a full glass of water.
  • Store below 25° C.
  • Shake well before use.

Answer to question number 4:

Age of the patient is 7years.

Weight of the patient is 130lbs. Converting to kgs, we get 130lbs = 59kgs

Prescribed dose of Leviteracetam is 20mg/kg/day in 2 doses for 10 days

Therefore, we need 20mg x 59kg =1180 mg/day.

Available dose in the pharmacy is 100mg/ml

Therefore 1180mg ÷ 100ml = 11.8 ml/ day rounded in to 12ml/day

Since we require 12ml/day, the total dose for 30 days will be 12ml x 30 =360ml.

Instruction on the label:

  • Take 6ml of the Levetiracetam suspension two times a day for 30 days
  • Store below 25° C.
  • Shake well before use.
  • Take it around the same time every day

Answer to question number 5:

Age of the patient is 14 years.

Weight of the patient is 120lbs. Converting to kgs, we get 120lbs = 54.4kgs

Prescribed dose of Cefdinir is 7mg/kg/day in 2 doses for 10 days

Therefore, we need 7mg x 54.4kg =380.8 mg/day.

Available dose in the pharmacy is 250mg/5ml

Therefore 380.8mg x 5ml ÷ 250mg = 7.6 ml/ day

Since we required 7.6ml/day, the total dose for 10 days will be 7.6ml x 10 = 76ml.

Instruction on the label:

  • Take 3.8ml of the Cefdinir suspension two times a day for 10 days.
  • Shake well before use.
  • Take it around the same time every day
