Identifying a Nursing Perceptor, who can offer  a positive experience:

Nursing Perceptor is a registered nurse, who is experienced and enthusiastic about nursing profession and who has capability and willingness to teach and support next generation nurses. Perceptorship helps the students who came from a classroom environment to adapt to the Hospital envenvironment. Perceptor facilitates and evaluates student learning in the clinical area , in addition to the other responsibilities they have as a part of their profession.

Identifying a nurse perceptor: The charecteristics of a good Nurse Perceptor are:

Personal qualities :

* Patience

* desire to teach

* friendly and approachable

* enthusiastic

* well organized

Professional qualities:

* recognise the learning needs of new nurses or trainees

* ability to plan clinical experience according to the learning needs

* a good role model of professional interactions and nursing actions

* create a conducive learning environment  

* assign the new nurses appropriate patient care assignments

* able to communicate effectively with each new student/  nurse

* ability to share knowledge and expertise

* Provide appropriate feed back.

A Nursing Perceptor should have three main skills; interpersonal  skills, competency assessment skills and instructing skills. These skills can make her a good Perceptor, who can mould competent next generation nurses.
