A manufacturer has produced a new drug for depression. The pharmaceutical company performed a study in which 25 depressed subjects took the new medication and 25 depressed subjects took a placebo pill. Neither the subjects nor the examiners administering the questionnaire knew who was in the drug group and who was in the placebo group.
After 2 months, the subjects who took the drug had significantly improved scores on a standardized depression symptom questionnaire. The only side effects seen with greater frequency in the group receiving the drug were mild headache, mild nausea, and insomnia over the first week of therapy.
What can be concluded from this study?
