PATIENT - CENTERED MEDICINE

Patient centered medicine can be defined as the medical practice aimed at improving the health outcomes of individual patients in everyday clinical ractice ,taking into account their references, objectives and values,as well as the available economic resources.

The main objective of PCM is to improve the heath outcomes for individual patients. The most essential element of PCM is the active participaton of patients in the decision-making process. The concept of shared decision making calls a significant change in the traditional model of the doctor-patient relationship. PCM model is based on greater information exchange. The doctor must provide the patient with full and comprehensible information on the disease, prognosis ,and the potential benefits and risks of the different therapeutic options available. In turn ,the patient must provide the doctor with preferences and attittudes towards the disease and the risks involved.

OUR CURRENT HEALTH CARE SYSTEM PROMOTES PCM OR NOT

I firmly believe that our health care system promotes PCM. Due to the technological advancements, more than ever before, patients are aware of their health conditions, various treatment options available, and how it is going to effect their quality of life etc. Therefore they actively participates in the decision making . Health care wokers also promotes PCM because patients are more likely to stick to treatment plans if they feel respected ,and involved. PCM is time and cost efficient. Eventhough patient centered model requires an unanticipated level of commitment, health care systems are adapting PCM model because of the improved satisfaction among patients and families, which in turn results in the improved work satisfaction of the heath care workers, and enhanced reputation of providers among health care consumers.PCM also increases morale and productivity among the staffs and improves resource allocation.
