Answer #1

Nuvaring is a flexible v-aginal ring that is used as a contraceptive method to avoid pregnancy. It is a safe and easy contraceptive method that works really well. The small flexible ring is put inside the v-agina that prevents pregnancy by releasing hormones into our body. Like most contraceptive pills, nuva ring contains hormones like estrogen and progesterone. These hormones prevent ovulation. Absence of egg prevents fertilization and hence pregnancy is avoided. These hormones also thickens the mucous that creates a mucous plug in the cervix and hence blocks the pathway for the sperms to swim inside the body.

However, nuva ring is a great option for preventing pregnancy but it doesn't prevent sexually transmitted diseases.

Women who should not use nuvarings :

* The women who smoke should not consider using nuvarings as a method of contraception.

* Having thrombotic diseases

* Having liver disorders

* Having breast cancers or sensitivity to estrogen or progestin

* Having undiagnosed uterine bleeding.

GENERAL SIDE EFFECTS OF USING NUVA RINGS

* Infection

* Heavy uterine bleeding

* Headache

* High blood pressure

* Amenorrhea or oligomenorrhea

PATIENT EDUCATION FOR USING NUVARING:

* Nova ring is to be put in for 3 weeks. It is removed for one week break during which time the patient has her periods.

Make sure to remove the ring at the same time or after same interval each time.

* Do not use any other female contraception such as female condom or spermidical jelly as they may hinder with the working of Nuva ring.

* Use of tampon will not make Nuva ring less effective.

* Using more than one Nuva ring at a time is highly contraindicated as higher concentration of hormones may cause severe health problems.
