Identify the lung volume and lung capacity changes that occur in obstruction and restrictive lungs disorders.

Answer #1

Obstructive lung diseases include conditions that make it hard to exhale all the air in the lungs. People with restrictive lung disease have difficulty fully expanding their lungs with air. Obstructive and restrictive lung disease share the same main symptom: shortness of breath with exertion.

The obstructed lung, respiration ends prematurely, thus increasing RV and FRC. In the restricted lung, volumes are small because inspiration is limited due to reduced compliance.

In onstructed lung = reduce VC, IRV, ERV

Increase RV, FRC, TLC And FEV <80% but FVC >80%

In Restricted lung = reduce VC, RV, FRC, TLC, IC

And FVC <80% But FEV normal

IRV - inspiratory reserve volume

IC - Inspiratory capacity

ERV- expiratory reserve volume

RV -residual volume

FRC- functional residual volume

TLC- total lung capacity
