How should healthcare professionals make those decisions?
How do we decide when enough is enough in terms of our life-support efforts for patients, and who should help us to make such important decisions?
Two approaches are mainly used in decision making for a patient who requires life support .first is substituted judgement and second is best interests.sometimes these are combined. In case of substituted judgement, the healthcare professional consider himself at the patient's position and take judgement, whereas,in best interest taking the best approach to treat the patient.
The important decisions are made by the family when the doctor explains the patient's condition, whether to put the patient on life support medications and devices. When the effort to maintain the life of the patient on life support device fails to do so,the medical team took the decision.the medical includes doctors, nurses, respiratory therapist etc.Important decisions are made by the doctor and confirms that patient cannot be survived with any measures.
