1. You are driving down a back road in Lacombe and come across a car that has flipped. You see 2 people: The driver have been thrown from the car and has a terrible gash on the upper left thigh that is spurting bright red blood. He is in shock and yelling, what would you do? Is it venous or arterial?
2. The 2nd person was also thrown and has a bad cut on the upper arm that is dark red , and his shirt is saturated with blood. How would you handle this injury, is it venous or arterial?
1. In the first scenario the patient had bleeding in spurts that indicates it is an arterial bleeding and for that apply direct pressure over the wound and also apply pressure in the middle of the groin to control the bleeding from thigh
2. Dark coloured blood indicates that it is a venous blood and it can be stopped by applying direct pressure on the wound for 8 to 10 minutes by using the entire hand. Applying pressure on right spot will always stop the venous bleeding and applying elastic wrap is an excellent way to stop the bleeding until the client reaches to emergency
