If the stiffness of the cantilever beam increases in a given input (force), how do you expect the change of the strain gauge output? Describe the reason with mathematical relationship.

Answer #2

1) Stiffness = force / displacement

This relation shows that stiffness is directly proportional to force.

2) stress = force/ area

This relation shows that stress is directly proportional to force.

3). Hooks law -

Stress = K x Strain ( K is young’s modulus of elasticity)

It shows when in elastic limits stress is directly proportional to strain.

So to conclude,

As per your question stiffness is increasing, so the force will increase , force is increasing then stress is increasing and hence the strain will increase.

Q3: Bending moment and shear force diagrams were plotted for a cantilever beam of span 10 m when subjected to a uniformly distributed load of magnitude ‘w’ kN/m over the entire span, two concentrated loads ‘2w’ kN at a distance 3 m from the free end and ‘3.5w’ kN at a distance 4.5 m from the free end respectively. It was observed that the value for maximum bending moment acting on the beam is equal to (-175 kNm). Suggest a...
