A) Brakes are used when we have to halt the complete motion or rotation in case of brakes as well as clutches. While backstopping is used when we want to prevent backward motion or rotation.

B) The characteristics for the material of friction surfaces are that they should have a high and uniform coefficient of friction, should be affected by moisture and oil, the ability to withstand high temperatures as a result of slippage, high heat conductivity, and high resistance to wear and scoring.
