A pump is used to pump oil to a tank located 10-m high at room temperature. The oil flow is laminar. Now, if the oil is pre-heated while the oil flowrate is maintained, discuss whether the pumping power of the pump will increase or decrease.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Power of a pump depends on the 4 factors i.e. Density of fluid, height, flow rate, acceleration due to gravity.

Since, in the above case height, flow rate and acceleration due to gravity remains constant, therefore only variable is density of fluid.

When the oil is pre-heated its density decreases (density decreases with increase in temperature for liquids), if density decreases then power of pump also decreases because both are directly proportional to each other keeping all other terms constant.

pumping power of pump will decrease.

A 3-m-diameter tank is initially filled with water 2 m above the center of a sharp-edged 10-cmdiameter orifice. The tank water surface is open to the atmosphere, and the orifice drains to the atmosphere through a 100-m-long pipe. The friction coefficient of the pipe can be taken to be 0.015 and the effect of the kinetic energy correction factor can be neglected. Someone suggests that it makes no difference whether the pump is located at the beginning or at the...

To use the sun, a parametric mirror is used to focus 1 m^2 of sunlight onto a well-insulated container that contains 5 liters of water at room temperature (20°C) and 1 atm of pressure. The mirror provides 1368 W of power while the sun is shining, which it provides on average 4.6 hours per day in New Hampshire (during other times the sun is too high or too low to hit the mirror). Note that the specific heat of steam...

1. Consider a 1.8-m high and 1.5 m-wide double-pane window consisting of two 4-mm thick layers of glass (k = 0.78 W/m°C) separated by a 10-mm wide stagnant air space (k = 0.026 W/m°C). The room is maintained at 20°C while the temperature of the outdoors is -10°C. Take the convective heat transfer coefficients on the inner and outer surfaces of the window to be 10 W/m2°C and 40 W/m2°C, respectively. Determine the steady rate of heat transfer through this...

Fueling Indonesians: Window of Opportunity or Regret? Kerosene is widely used as cooking fuel by Indonesian households, with an annual usage of 10 million Kiloliters. It is a major subsidized fuel for household cooking, where its usage is over sixty percent of the 230 million population. The subsidy program costs the government heavily, where it amounts up to U.S.$4 billion a year. As the practice tends to bleed government expenditures quite heavily, the Indonesian government is embarking on a change...
